What to Do When There is a Chemical Spill

There is hazardous materials we come in contact with everyday. A lot of tasks that we do from home cleaning to powering our cars use chemicals or hazardous materials. But if you do not exercise care, these useful things can be very dangerous than they need to be. If you know the measures to take when there are accidental releases of these harmful materials, it could spell the difference between life and death. The tiniest chemical released in the air or spilled on the floor, can become a major issues, so do not take this issue lightly.

Harmful gas released in the air can be most dangerous because it is unseen. Saving your life and the life of others is possible if you have the right equipment and you know the right procedures to follow. There has to be an immediate action when hazardous gas, no matter how little, is released in the atmosphere. If you know accidental release measures, you need not panic because you can act decisively, immediately.

If your company has a hazard communication program, it is best to participate in it. In this program you will be learning about chemicals and how dangerous they are, chemical labeling and MSDS or materials safety data sheet. There is also a ‘Spill Guidelines’ which you can familiarize yourself with, for your facility. The ‘Emergency Response Plan’ is very useful and is good to have a copy for you.

All workers who are likely to witness a spill, leak or accidental release measure of a hazardous material should undergo the training on ‘First Response Awareness Level’. It is important for employees to know reporting procedures to initiate emergency response. There is a training for the first group of workers who actually respond to spills, called the ‘First Responder Operations Level’ training. This training is for workers who are tasked to be the first on the scene so that they can secure and contain the issue.

An operations level first responder will go to the scene and review it so as to determine the next best step, when a hazardous spill occurs. Evacuation and placing barriers around the spill can be done to prevent the spreading of the chemicals. Then they can put up signs or caution tapes so that workers will know that there was a spill, so they can stay away from danger.

Workers need to contain the spill. Workers should use the equipment designated for that particular hazard type that has been released.

Never used sandbags for chemical spills because they absorb hazardous substances.
